The classic aquarium author William T. Innes tied that stable warmth to disease prevention: “A good practical temperature for general use is 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 degrees Celsius. What decides how many fish fit
- Adult size, not the size you buy. A 1″ fish may reach 3″. Stock for the adult.
- Bioload: how much waste the fish make. Shrimp and snails add almost none; goldfish are far too big for a 10 g.
- Filtration and water changes: more capacity buys more headroom. Aim for 4–6× turnover per hour.
- Schooling minimums: tetras and rasboras need 6+ of their own kind or they get stressed.
- Footprint: a 10 g is short, so active swimmers like most danios want a longer tank.
This is why surface area, not raw gallons, has long been the better guide. William T. Innes put it as a rule of thumb: “A good working rule is Twenty-Four Square Inches of Water Surface to Every Inch of Body Length of Fish.”1
Common overstocking mistakes
- Following “1 inch of fish per gallon.” It ignores adult size and bioload and leads to ammonia spikes. As Innes noted, bioload scales with fish size rather than inches summed: “Furthermore a four-inch fish consumes much more oxygen than four one-inch fishes. It would, therefore, be well to bear in mind that in constant high temperatures (80 to 90 degrees), or for large fishes, more room should be allowed than the rule calls for.”1
- Putting goldfish, common plecos, or angelfish in a 10 g. They all outgrow it.
- Keeping two male bettas, or a male and female betta together.
- Adding every fish at once before the tank has cycled. In a healthy tank, ammonia reads 0 ppm.2
