Why 5–6, not more
Part of the appeal is the color. The classic aquarium author William T. Innes put it plainly: “The extraordinary variation in the coloring of the males makes this species a neverending source of fascination. No matter how large the collection, it is practically impossible to find two just alike. They are appropriately called the ‘Rainbow Fish.‘“1
Guppies stay small (about 2″) but stay busy. Five or six adults put a moderate load on a 10-gallon while leaving headroom for stable water. You can fit more on paper, but two things catch beginners out:
- Breeding. One male and two females can turn into 30+ fish in a few months.3 All-male groups stay put.
- Bioload creep. Guppies eat and waste a lot for their size, so a packed tank spikes ammonia between water changes.
