How Many Guppies Can You Keep in a 10-Gallon Tank?
Short answer: A 10-gallon tank holds about 5–6 adult guppies. Keep them all-male to avoid breeding; a mixed group can multiply into dozens within months and overload the tank.

Why 5–6, not more
Guppies stay small (about 2″) but stay busy. Five or six adults put a moderate load on a 10-gallon while leaving headroom for stable water. You can fit more on paper, but two things catch beginners out:
- Breeding. One male and two females can turn into 30+ fish in a few months. All-male groups stay put.
- Bioload creep. Guppies eat and waste a lot for their size, so a packed tank spikes ammonia between water changes.
A balanced 10-gallon guppy setup
- 5–6 male guppies
- 6+ cherry shrimp (optional, in a planted tank)
- 1 nerite snail for algae
Run a cycled tank, a heater around 76°F, and a filter rated for ~40 GPH.

FAQ
- Can I keep male and female guppies in a 10-gallon?
- You can, but one trio (1 male, 2 females) breeds non-stop and soon overstocks a 10-gallon. An all-male group of 5–6 stays put.
- How many guppies and how much else fits in a 10-gallon?
- About 5–6 guppies leaves room for a small cleanup crew such as cherry shrimp and a nerite snail. Add more guppies only if your filtration and water changes can keep up.
- Do guppies need a heater in a 10-gallon tank?
- Yes. Guppies do best at 72–82°F, so a small heater and a filter are both needed.
