Short answer: Peaceful, non-fin-nipping bottom and mid-dwellers can live with a male betta, but only in a heated, filtered 10-gallon or larger tank. Good options include corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus, ember tetras, snails, and shrimp. Avoid other bettas, guppies, and fin-nippers.

A male betta guards its space, so tank mates have to be peaceful, non-flashy, and no threat to its fins, and you need room. In a heated, filtered 10-gallon or larger tank, these work well. Seriously Fish notes that ornamental bettas are “best kept alone” and “not recommended for the standard community aquarium.”²

Safe betta tank mates

The classic aquarium author William T. Innes made the key point a century ago: “Betta, the Siamese Fighting-fish, can be kept with other fishes as it fights only its own kind.”¹ The aggression is aimed at other bettas, not at calm, unrelated species.

Add tank mates after the betta settles in, plant the tank with hiding spots, and watch for flaring or nipping over the first few days.

What to avoid

Other bettas: males fight, so keep one. As Innes put it, “Unfortunately males cannot be left together, as they tear each other’s fins badly.”¹
Guppies and fancy long-finned fish: bright trailing fins draw aggression or get nipped.
Fin-nippers: tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and similar shred a betta’s fins.
Cool-water fish, or any fish in a tank under 10 gallons. A betta needs warm, stable water; FishBase documents a tolerance of 24–30°C and pH 6.0–8.0 for Betta splendens, so every tank mate must match the same warm range.³
