Why tank size matters more with guppies than most fish
Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) stay small at about 2 inches, so space per fish is rarely the problem.1 The problem is breeding. One male and two females can become 30+ fish in a few months, and every fry adds ammonia load. A 10-gallon buffers that growth; a 5-gallon does not.
An all-male group sidesteps the issue entirely. Five or six males in a 10-gallon is the most common setup in the data (median 6 fish in the 6-10 gal bracket), and it keeps the color without the population explosion.
