What Size Tank Do Neon Tetras Need?
Short answer: Neon tetras need at least a 10-gallon tank for a school of 6. Most real keepers with neons use 11-20 gallons or larger. We checked 36 neon tetra setups to see what tank sizes people actually pick.

Neon tetras need a minimum of 10 gallons for a school of 6. In practice, most keepers with neons use tanks of 11 gallons or larger. We checked 36 real neon tetra setups in the AquaGauge dataset (July 2026 snapshot) to see what sizes people actually choose.
What real keepers actually use
We pulled every neon tetra setup in the AquaGauge dataset where the keeper reported both tank size and neon count. That gave us 36 setups out of 51 neon tetra reports total.

The per-gallon median is 0.3 neons per gallon (max 0.93). That ratio stays low because these are community tanks: keepers split their stocking budget across multiple species, not just neons.
Most neon tetra keepers in the dataset use a tank of 11 gallons or larger. The 11-20 gallon range is the most common choice, with 17 of the 36 sized setups, and another 8 run neons in tanks over 40 gallons. Only 4 setups sat in the 6-10 gallon range, and just 1 went below 6 gallons.
Why 10 gallons is the practical minimum
Neon tetras are small (about 1.5 inches adult) but active horizontal swimmers. A school of 6 needs at least 20 inches of tank length to school properly.1 A standard 10-gallon is 20 inches long, which just meets that threshold.
Smaller tanks cause two problems:
- Temperature swings. Neon tetras tolerate 70-81 F, but a 5-gallon changes temperature faster than a 10-gallon.2 Real aquarium keepers run a median of 78 F across the 369 tanks in our dataset that reported temperature.
- pH instability. A smaller water volume concentrates waste faster, pushing pH down between water changes. Neons prefer pH 5.0-7.0 but need it stable.1
A 20-gallon is the better starting point if you want a community. It doubles your bioload budget and gives a school of 10-15 neons room to display tight schooling behavior.
The bioload math at each size
Each neon tetra adds 0.8 bioload units. Here is what the stocking calculator shows:
- 10 gallon: 10 units total. Fits 10-12 neons alone, or 6-8 in a community.
- 20 gallon: 20 units. Fits 15-20 neons alone, or 10-12 with tankmates.
- 40 gallon: 40 units. A full school of 20+ with plenty of room for corydoras, a centerpiece fish, and plants.
The minimum school size is 6.1 Fewer than 6 causes stress, color loss, and erratic swimming. If your tank math only fits 4, pick a smaller species.

We analyzed 36 neon tetra setups (out of 51 neon tetra reports total) from the AquaGauge real-tank dataset, compiled from public posts across 12 aquarium subreddits. - Can neon tetras live in a 5-gallon tank?
- Technically one keeper in our dataset ran 4 neons in a 5-gallon, but it is too small for a proper school. A 5-gallon swings in temperature and pH fast, and neons need room to swim horizontally. Start at 10 gallons.
- Is a 10-gallon tank good for neon tetras?
- Yes. A 10-gallon fits a school of 6-10 neons comfortably. Each neon carries 0.8 bioload units, so 10 gallons gives you room for the school plus a few tankmates.
- How many neon tetras can I keep in a 20-gallon?
- About 15-20 as the primary species. A 20-gallon handles roughly 20 bioload units, and each neon adds 0.8. In a community tank, subtract your other fish first.
- Do neon tetras need a heater?
- Yes, unless your room stays between 72-78 F year-round. Neon tetras come from warm South American streams and are sensitive to temperature drops.
