Julii Corydoras Care
Short answer: Most 'julii corydoras' in shops are actually the near-identical Corydoras trilineatus (the false julii or leopard cory). Either way care is the same: a peaceful 2-inch shoaling catfish kept in groups of six or more on soft sand in a 20-gallon. Across real tanks keepers run a median of 5 in a 20-gallon.

The julii corydoras (Corydoras julii) is the spotted “leopard” cory — but here is the catch most care guides skip: most fish sold as julii are actually the near-identical Corydoras trilineatus, the “false julii.”2 The good news is that care is identical, so it almost never matters which one you have.
A peaceful, bottom-dwelling shoaling cory; keep a group of at least six on soft sand in a 20-gallon or larger tank.2

Authority = recommended ranges for C. julii (figures apply equally to the look-alike C. trilineatus). "Real tanks" = our julii stocking data (25 tanks) + genus-level corydoras water (median 78 °F / pH 7.5). Figures are from the July 2026 snapshot (6,414 tanks total).
Julii or trilineatus? The ID myth
True Corydoras julii and C. trilineatus look so alike that the vast majority of “julii” in shops are trilineatus.2 The traditional tell is the head pattern: julii has fine, separate spots on the head, while trilineatus shows more connected, worm-like (vermiform) markings.2 Even that is not foolproof — some trilineatus are spotted — so without collection data it is often impossible to be sure. For a home aquarium it does not matter: both are 2-inch peaceful community corys with identical care, which is exactly what this page describes.
How many, and tank size
Keep at least six. Encouragingly, julii keepers land closer to that target than most cory varieties: across the 25 real julii tanks that stated a size in the AquaGauge dataset (July 2026 snapshot), the 11 tanks in the 20-gallon range hold a median of 5 (rising to 6 across the seven tanks at 21–40 gallons) — just shy of the recommended six, where most varieties sit well below it. A 20-gallon is the comfortable minimum; these are small corys but still active foragers that want floor space. Plan the mix in the stocking calculator or see the full how many corydoras breakdown.
Water and substrate
Julii (and trilineatus) are standard tropical community corys: soft to neutral, stable water around 73–79 °F (23–26 °C) and pH 6.0–7.5.1 Use soft sand so they can sift for food without wearing down their barbels, and keep the bottom clean — see the genus corydoras water parameters for the full picture.
Diet
Julii corys are omnivorous scavengers, not an algae crew. Feed a sinking pellet or wafer as the staple, plus frozen bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp.2 Make sure food reaches the bottom in a busy community tank.
Tankmates
Peaceful and indifferent to other fish, julii corys are excellent community tankmates. They pair well with small tetras, rasboras, livebearers, dwarf gouramis, shrimp and other corys; avoid anything large or aggressive enough to bully a small bottom-dweller. Check a specific combination in the stocking calculator.
Lifespan and breeding
Julii corys are long-lived for small fish — keepers generally report five to ten years or more with stable water and good food.
Breeding follows the genus pattern: a large, cooler water change triggers spawning, the female deposits sticky eggs on the aquarium glass and fine-leaved plants, and they hatch in about three to four days.2 Once their yolk sacs are absorbed, the fry take microworm and baby brine shrimp over a thin layer of sand.2

FAQ
- Is my julii corydoras actually a trilineatus?
- Probably. Most fish sold as julii in the aquarium trade are the near-identical Corydoras trilineatus (the 'false julii' or leopard cory). True C. julii has fine, separate spots on the head; trilineatus shows more worm-like (vermiform) lines. Care is identical, so it rarely matters in practice.
- How many julii corydoras should I keep?
- At least six. They are shoaling catfish that forage confidently in a group. Across the julii tanks in our data that stated a size, keepers in the 20-gallon range stock a median of 5 — closer to the recommended six than most cory varieties manage.
- What size tank do julii corydoras need?
- A 20-gallon is the comfortable minimum for a group of six. Julii (and trilineatus) stay small at about 5 cm (2 in) but still need floor space to forage.
- What water do julii corydoras need?
- Soft to neutral, stable water around 73-79°F (23-26°C) and pH 6.0-7.5, on soft sand. They are typical tropical community corys.
