Those are the medians across 559 real goldfish tanks in the AquaGauge dataset (July 2026 snapshot), compiled from r/Goldfish posts where keepers shared water test results. The numbers sit squarely inside the 10-41 C (50-106 F) survival tolerance FishBase lists for the species, but cluster much tighter than that range suggests.1

Two things stand out. First, the temperature cluster is lower than tropical fish: the middle half of goldfish tanks sit between 73 and 78 F, confirming goldfish are coldwater species kept cooler than bettas or tetras. Second, ammonia is overwhelmingly zero (median, Q1, Q3 all 0 ppm), but the mean is 1.7 because goldfish produce so much waste that cycling crashes hit hard when they happen.

Nitrogen: the heavy-waste tax
Goldfish produce far more ammonia per body mass than tropical community fish. Each goldfish carries a bioload of 15 units, compared to 1 for a guppy or 0.8 for a neon tetra. That waste load makes nitrogen monitoring essential.
Nitrate: The median is 10 ppm and 82% of goldfish keepers stay at or below 20 ppm. Only 4% exceed 40 ppm. Keep nitrate under 20 ppm with regular water changes. Goldfish tanks need 30-50% changes weekly, not the 10-20% that works for lighter-stocked tropical setups.
Ammonia and nitrite: Both should read zero in a cycled tank. The median for both is 0 ppm.
